A drone is useful only when the planned flight is lawful, permitted from the ground location, operationally realistic, and capable of producing the required output. Senkōra therefore uses this order:

  1. Define the purpose of the operation.
  2. Identify the exact launch area, route, and date.
  3. Determine the applicable FAA framework.
  4. Check airspace, authorization needs, and ground restrictions.
  5. Determine registration and Remote ID obligations.
  6. Select the camera and aircraft capabilities.
  7. Validate the controller, batteries, charging, spares, and packed kit.

Starting with a product ranking reverses the decision. It can lead to buying an aircraft that is too complex, cannot be used at the intended destination, or adds camera capability the operator does not need.

Step 1: define the operation

Write one sentence describing the intended flight and output. Examples include learning basic control for recreation, recording short travel clips, photographing a landscape deliberately, following a planned aerial-video shot list, or performing work for an organization.

The distinction between recreation and other operations is fundamental. The FAA states that lack of compensation alone does not make a flight recreational. Flights conducted under the limited recreational exception must be purely for recreation and meet that exception’s requirements. Part 107 is the default framework for many non-recreational small-drone operations, including work or business uses.

Step 2: verify the place and airspace

Check the location for the date and time of the planned flight. FAA-approved B4UFLY service providers present airspace information, temporary flight restrictions, airports, special-use areas, and other situational-awareness data. Controlled airspace may require prior authorization through LAANC or DroneZone, subject to the operation and location.

Airspace status and ground permission are separate. A favorable airspace indication does not grant access to private property or permission to launch from land managed by a park, municipality, agency, event organizer, or other owner. Conversely, landowner permission does not replace an FAA airspace authorization.

For National Park Service destinations, check the exact unit. NPS superintendent restrictions generally prohibit launching, landing, or operating uncrewed aircraft, subject to limited conditions and exceptions. Other federal, state, local, tribal, and private lands use their own rules.

Step 3: identify the FAA framework

Recreational operation

FAA requirements for the limited recreational exception include flying only for recreation, following an FAA-recognized Community Based Organization’s safety guidelines, keeping the aircraft within visual line of sight, giving way to other aircraft, respecting the authorized altitude, taking TRUST, carrying proof, and meeting registration and Remote ID requirements when applicable.

In Class G uncontrolled airspace, recreational flight is generally limited to 400 feet above ground level. Controlled airport airspace requires prior authorization at the authorized altitude. Neither statement overrides temporary restrictions, prohibited areas, or other applicable rules.

Part 107 and other non-recreational operations

Many work, business, organizational, and other non-recreational small-drone operations fall under 14 CFR Part 107. The remote pilot certification, registration, operating, recurrent-training, airspace, night, operations-over-people, and waiver requirements are not interchangeable with the recreational checklist. Consult the current FAA Part 107 material for the intended operation rather than inferring eligibility from the aircraft’s size.

Step 4: determine registration and Remote ID needs

For a flight solely under the recreational exception, the FAA requires registration when the drone weighs 250 grams or more. A drone below that threshold is not exempt from TRUST, airspace, visual-line-of-sight, safety, or location requirements. Propeller guards, lights, accessories, and payloads can change the takeoff weight.

If a drone requires registration, it generally must broadcast Remote ID information unless it is operated under an applicable alternative such as within an FAA-Recognized Identification Area and under the relevant conditions. Remote ID can be built into a Standard Remote ID drone or supplied by an eligible broadcast module. Confirm the exact US aircraft variant and Declaration of Compliance rather than relying only on a family name or retailer description.

Step 5: choose the aircraft around the output

Resolution alone does not establish image quality. Evaluate sensor format, lens angle, still-image format, dynamic-range options, frame rates, bitrate, color workflow, vertical capture, storage, and how the files match ground cameras. Step 6: compare the complete flight system

Compare the exact aircraft with its controller, required phone or display, batteries, charging hub or adapter, propellers, memory card, protective storage, cables, and any Remote ID module. A compact aircraft with a large controller and several batteries may not form a compact travel kit.

Advertised maximum flight time is not safe usable flight time. The pilot needs enough reserve to return and land, including when wind, cold, altitude, battery condition, maneuvers, or a changed route increases energy use. Treat manufacturer endurance as a comparison input under stated conditions, not as a mission duration promise.

Step 7: treat automation as assistance

Obstacle sensing, return-to-home, geofencing, subject tracking, and automated shots can reduce workload. They do not transfer responsibility away from the pilot. Thin branches, wires, low light, reflective surfaces, moving objects, terrain, wind, positioning errors, and an incorrect return altitude can defeat automated behavior.

Before each flight, check the operation, airspace, ground permission, temporary restrictions, weather, aircraft, propellers, battery, controller link, home point, return altitude, people, wildlife, route, alternates, and landing area.
