A simple optical window for street photography
SmallRig’s two external optical viewfinders offer a way to compose at eye level using a camera’s accessory shoe. The 28mm model is 5873; the 35mm model is 6172. Both provide 3:2 frame lines and a fixed field of view. They can appeal to photographers who prefer a direct view of the street or use a camera without a built-in finder.

Specifications come from SmallRig’s 28mm page and 35mm page. SmallRig specifies a weight tolerance of ±5 g. Transmission figures are manufacturer claims, not Senkōra measurements or a ranking of viewing comfort.
Match the lens field of view, not just the camera brand
The number on the finder describes a full-frame-equivalent view. A 35mm lens on an APS-C camera does not therefore match the 35mm finder. Divide the finder number by the camera’s crop factor to estimate the required actual focal length.

These are calculated field-of-view targets, not a camera compatibility list. For example, an 18mm lens at 1.5x is equivalent to 27mm, while 23mm at 1.5x is 34.5mm. On a 1.6x body, the same lenses become 28.8mm and 36.8mm equivalent. Small differences remain, even before considering finder coverage and parallax.
The Micro Four Thirds row explains the arithmetic only: SmallRig’s checked lists do not establish support for that system. Its usual 4:3 capture ratio also differs from these finders’ 3:2 markings. Check shoe fit separately and use the camera display to compare the actual edges.
A zoom must stay at the matching focal length for the frame lines to remain useful. Digital crops, video crops and stabilization crops can narrow the recorded image without changing the finder at all.
Shoe compatibility does not guarantee matching framing
SmallRig lists selected Fujifilm, Sony, Nikon, Canon, Ricoh and Leica cameras. That establishes the manufacturer’s stated mounting scope, not a promise that every attached lens matches both finders. Check three things independently: the camera’s shoe, the lens’s equivalent field of view, and the capture aspect ratio.
Make sure the finder sits securely without obstructing controls or touching a raised housing. A flash, microphone or radio trigger may already need that same shoe. A different mounting position can also change the offset between the lens and finder, so an accessory bracket is not an automatic solution.
Why is the Nikon Z5IIC missing?
The Nikon entries on both SmallRig pages are Z30, Z50II, Z fc and Z f. The Z5IIC is absent, and SmallRig does not state why. The omission does not prove incompatibility, but it also does not establish that the finder has been checked on that body.
Do not assume a list update is merely delayed because the camera is recent. Before buying specifically for a Z5IIC, obtain confirmation of shoe fit and clearance from SmallRig or inspect a physical sample. Even if it fits, the selected lens must still match 28mm or 35mm equivalent. Parallax and the limits of an optical accessory
The finder sits above the taking lens and sees the scene from a different position. For a close subject, that offset can move the recorded composition enough to cut off an edge you thought was safely inside the frame. The effect becomes less significant at greater distances, but these frame lines should still be treated as a guide.
Use the camera screen for close portraits, tabletop subjects and precise edge placement. Neither finder shows the sensor image, focus peaking, exposure preview or playback. Your camera can continue to autofocus, but this window cannot confirm which subject it selected.
You may be able to compose with the rear display off, depending on the camera’s settings. Check exposure and focus first, and review frames periodically. We have not measured any battery-life improvement. If you wear glasses, check whether you can see all the frame lines comfortably before committing to this workflow.

The $46.99 price for each model is corroborated by SmallRig’s reseller catalog: 5873 and 6172. The main storefront price did not load reliably during our check, so we are not treating that figure as a freshly verified US checkout total.
SmallRig’s main 35mm page is labeled preorder, while its reseller catalog displays a different stock status. Those are separate listings; neither establishes a guaranteed US delivery date. Confirm price, shipping and availability for your order. These figures are not Amazon offers.
Choose the 28mm 5873 product guide for wide framing, or the 35mm 6172 product guide for a tighter view with a matching lens. Buying both is useful only if you actually work at both equivalent focal lengths.

No. It is a separate optical window, not a display of the camera's sensor image. The camera may still autofocus, but the finder does not show where focus landed.
Can I use a 35mm lens with the 35mm finder on APS-C?
