Start with the camera you will take out tomorrow

For a walk, family outing or weekend trip, the useful question is whether a camera makes the picture easier to create without making the bag so awkward that it stays home. These three cameras answer that question differently. The PEN balances photographic controls with a small lens system. The X-M5 gives up a finder and body stabilization to keep its body light. The a6700 asks you to carry more in return for a broader hybrid toolkit.
This is a comparison of manufacturer documentation, not a physical test. We have not measured autofocus accuracy, image quality, heat limits or pocket fit.
What the Japanese ranking actually tells us
Kitamura’s September 2026 ranking places the PEN kit second, between the Sony a7C II and a6700. It is one Japanese retailer’s ranking, not a US market survey, and does not establish market share or shipment volume. Orders for a newly announced camera also do not establish that customers already have it in hand.
“Compact” has no defined size threshold in this ranking, and several entries are full-frame cameras. Compactness and sensor size are different questions. Treat the ranking as a reason to examine everyday kits, rather than proof that the entire market has changed.

Totals are arithmetic sums of manufacturer weights, not scale measurements, and exclude caps, straps, chargers and spare batteries. Dimension conventions differ, so the body-depth numbers are not a measured comparison of assembled kits. The lens extends in use; try the exact combination in your bag before calling it pocketable. The Sony total applies to the original SELP1650, not an OSS II kit or an 18-135mm bundle.
The Fuji lens starts wider, at approximately 23mm equivalent; Sony’s starts at 24mm and PEN’s at 28mm. That can matter more than a few grams when framing an interior or a group. None of these variable-aperture kit zooms is a substitute for a bright lens when photographing moving subjects indoors.
Evening walks: stabilization and a finder
Choose the PEN if your priority is composing still photographs through an EVF, experimenting with an in-camera look and keeping the system modest. Its body stabilization helps with stationary scenes at slower shutter speeds. It cannot freeze a person walking through the frame. Weather resistance is conditional on a suitable sealed lens and is not permission to immerse the kit.
Choose the a6700 if you also need more developed hybrid recording options, particularly when you already own Sony E lenses. A viewfinder helps you compose in bright sunlight and provides another point of contact when holding the camera.
The X-M5 remains useful for still photography, but its lack of an EVF is a meaningful compromise if you dislike screen composition. Its stabilized XC zoom reduces camera shake; an unstabilized prime does not inherit body stabilization. Try screen-only shooting outdoors before buying.
Ready-to-share photographs: choose a look you enjoy
Fujifilm’s Film Simulations are a reason to choose the X-M5 when you want JPEGs that fit your taste without a long editing session. PEN offers adjustable color and monochrome profiles. Sony’s Creative Looks also provide in-camera choices. These are different workflows, not an objectively ranked color contest.
Compare official samples in the kind of light you use, then save RAW alongside JPEG while learning. White balance, exposure and light still shape the result. A fashionable camera does not automatically produce a photograph you like.
Travel video: recording flexibility has a carry cost
The X-M5’s 3:2 open-gate recording is attractive when one clip needs horizontal and vertical edits. The a6700 offers higher-frame-rate 4K for slow motion, with a significant additional crop at 120p. A wide kit lens can therefore become less wide in the finished video. The PEN’s 4K30 workflow is adequate on paper for ordinary travel clips, but less flexible for high-frame-rate 4K work.
Digital stabilization changes framing. IBIS does not guarantee smooth walking footage. Check mode-specific crops, memory-card requirements, microphone connections and recording duration for your intended settings. We have not conducted a thermal test or a walking-video comparison.
US cost: compare the exact checkout basket
On October 11, OM System’s US store displayed $999.99 body-only and $1,099.99 for the silver PEN with 14-42mm III, both as preorder offers. Its kit page estimated an October 14 release. That is the manufacturer’s US estimate, not a delivery promise and not the Japanese November backlog described in the news report. Check the exact US kit and preorder terms.
B&H displayed $999.00 for the black X-M5 with XC15-45mm, marked temporarily out of stock, on October 11. An advertised amount is not a guarantee you can receive the camera before a trip. See the exact Fujifilm kit listing.
We could verify Sony’s original 16-50mm kit configuration, but could not reliably extract a matching live kit amount. We therefore do not substitute an older launch price, a body-only amount, a used listing or an OSS II bundle as if it were the same offer. Check the lens name, condition and final total before ordering. This is not a verified three-way cheapest-price ranking.
Add sales tax for your destination, a suitable memory card and any genuinely needed spare battery. Existing lenses can make staying in your current system less expensive than switching. A cheaper body with the wrong lens is not necessarily a cheaper usable setup.
Choose, wait or keep what you have
- Choose PEN if you want a small stills-first system with an EVF, IBIS and creative profiles, and its confirmed delivery terms suit your schedule. PEN kit guide.
- Choose X-M5 if you value lower equipped weight, Film Simulations and reframing video, and can comfortably work without an EVF or IBIS. X-M5 kit guide.
- Choose a6700 if the finder, stabilization and advanced video modes solve a recurring problem, especially within an existing E-mount kit. a6700 guide.
- Wait if you need a camera for a fixed departure date and only an uncertain preorder is available.
- Keep your current camera if a smaller compatible lens, one-lens outing or lighter bag will make you use it more. Spend a week carrying that simpler setup before replacing the body.

OM System
OM System PEN with 14-42mm III
Best for: Everyday stills with a viewfinder and body stabilization
A compact Micro Four Thirds kit for photographers who want to compose through a finder and finish their look in camera. US preorder, not confirmed stock.
Fujifilm
Fujifilm X-M5
The Fujifilm X-M5 with XC15-45mm zoom is a small screen-operated system for travel photos and creator video. It is most appealing when minimum body bulk matters more than eye-level framing.
Sony
Sony Alpha 6700 with 16-50mm OSS
Best for: Travel photography and demanding video
Body shown. The compared setup adds the original 16-50mm OSS lens. Combines a finder, stabilization and advanced video; distinguish OSS from OSS II listings.
Five key takeaways
- Calculated basic kit weights are about 518 g for PEN, 490 g for X-M5 and 609 g for a6700 with the original 16-50mm OSS.
- PEN and a6700 have electronic viewfinders and in-body stabilization; X-M5 has neither.
- A stabilized X-M5 kit lens helps with camera shake, but does not turn the body into an IBIS camera.
- PEN's US kit is listed for preorder; Japanese demand does not establish US stock or delivery dates.
- Choose a system for the pictures and footage you make, rather than a sales ranking.
Frequently asked questions
Which kit is the lightest?
The X-M5 with XC15-45mm is approximately 490 g from published component weights, compared with 518 g for PEN with 14-42mm III and 609 g for a6700 with the original 16-50mm OSS. These totals exclude caps, straps and spare batteries.
Does stabilization freeze a moving person?
No. Stabilization reduces camera shake. A moving child or pet still needs an appropriate shutter speed, sufficient light and suitable autofocus settings.
Is the new PEN the PEN-F or E-P7?
No. This comparison concerns OM System PEN announced in 2026, with a 20.4MP sensor, electronic viewfinder and 5-axis body stabilization.
