The answer in one glance
A travel camera does not have one useful weight. It has at least three: the body-only figure used in many comparisons, the camera-and-lens weight you actually hold, and the total packed load your shoulder carries.
Across the 20 compatible combinations below, a minimum ready-to-shoot system weighs from 486 g (17.1 oz) to 1,247 g (44.0 oz). That is before the strap, spare battery, charging gear, filters, cleaning items, insert, or bag.
Packed weight = camera body + working lens + every accessory + carrying system
The useful decision is therefore not “Which body is lightest?” It is “Which complete system delivers the view and reach I need at a weight I will carry?”

The rows are ordered by total weight within each use. They are not a performance ranking. A longer, brighter, better-sealed, or better-balanced lens may justify more mass for a specific trip.
What the numbers reveal
A small lens can neutralize a heavier body
The 493 g Sony a6700 is substantially heavier than the 355 g Fujifilm X-M5 body. With Sony’s 107 g retracting standard zoom, however, the a6700 combination remains at 600 g (21.2 oz). System design matters more than a body-weight headline.
Telephoto reach changes the packing problem
The Canon EOS R50 with RF-S 55-210mm totals 645 g (22.8 oz), while the R10 with RF 100-400mm totals 1,064 g (37.5 oz). These are not interchangeable lenses: the heavier option offers a different reach and capability envelope. The comparison shows why “wildlife camera weight” is meaningless until the lens is specified.
Premium features have a carrying cost
The X-T5 with XF 16-50mm reaches 797 g (28.1 oz), about 307 g (10.8 oz) above the X-M5 with XC 15-45mm. That difference accompanies different controls, construction, stabilization, viewfinder design, and lens characteristics. The right question is whether those capabilities earn their place on this trip.
Three weight budgets that work for planning
Use these as packing bands, not universal quality grades:
| Camera-and-lens total | Planning meaning | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Under 21 oz | Ultralight interchangeable-lens setup | Long walking days, cities, family travel, one compact zoom |
| 21 to 30 oz | Balanced travel system | Better controls, stabilization, or compact telephoto reach |
| Over 30 oz | Capability-first setup | Wildlife reach, stronger bodies, or lenses that justify dedicated carry support |
A 24-ounce camera on an uncomfortable narrow strap can feel worse than a 30-ounce camera in a well-fitted sling. Weight distribution, access, and lens length are part of the system even when they are not visible in a specification table.
Build your honest packed-weight number
Put every item you expect to carry on one scale at the same time:
- Camera with battery, card, and working lens attached.
- Strap, wrist loop, or capture clip.
- Every additional lens, cap, and hood.
- Spare batteries, charger or cable, power bank, and card wallet.
- Filters, blower, cloth, rain cover, and small tripod if they are truly coming.
- Insert, sling, or backpack.
Record that total beside your airline personal-item limit and the walking duration of the trip. Then remove anything that does not support a planned photograph. This turns weight from an abstract specification into a deliberate travel constraint.
How we built this Decision Lab
We used official manufacturer specifications current on August 15, 2026. For each row, we added the documented body weight to the documented lens weight, converted grams to ounces, and rounded the result to one decimal place.
Camera figures include a battery and memory card where the manufacturer defines its ready-to-shoot specification that way. Lens figures follow each manufacturer’s published convention, which may exclude caps or a hood. Because those conventions are not perfectly uniform, differences of only a few grams should not drive a purchase.
No retail samples were weighed for this study, and no handling or field-performance claim is made. The table is a reproducible planning dataset, not a substitute for putting your own complete bag on a scale.

Method and limitations
We added each manufacturer's documented camera weight, including battery and memory card where the manufacturer defines it that way, to the documented lens weight. Ounces are conversions from grams, rounded to one decimal. We did not add estimated accessory weights.
- This is a specification-based calculation, not a hands-on measurement of retail samples.
- Manufacturer conventions for caps, hoods, batteries, and cards are not perfectly uniform.
- The table excludes straps, spare batteries, charging equipment, filters, cleaning items, inserts, and bags.
- Lens reach, aperture, stabilization, sealing, and handling differ, so equal weight does not mean equal capability.
Five key takeaways
- The 11 everyday standard-zoom combinations span 17.1 to 28.1 ounces.
- The nine telephoto combinations span 22.8 to 44.0 ounces.
- Lens choice can change system weight more than choosing a lighter camera body.
- Manufacturer weights are comparable planning inputs, but inclusion conventions are not perfectly uniform.
- The only reliable complete-bag number is the one measured after every accessory and the carrying system are added.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good weight for a travel camera kit?
For an interchangeable-lens camera with one standard zoom, roughly 17 to 24 ounces is a genuinely light starting range in this study. Comfort still depends on the strap, bag, lens shape, and how long the kit stays in your hand.
Does this include the camera bag and accessories?
No. The table isolates the camera body in its manufacturer-defined ready-to-shoot state and one lens. Add the strap, spare battery, charger or cable, memory-card case, filters, cleaning items, and carrying system for your packed total.
Why not compare camera bodies alone?
A lens is mandatory for these cameras, and lens mass varies sharply. Body-only comparisons can therefore reverse the practical result once the lens needed for the trip is attached.
Were these kits weighed by Senkōra?
No. This is an editorial calculation from official manufacturer specifications verified on August 15, 2026, not a hands-on scale test.
